The difference between 'lay' and 'lie'

As Andy Williams reminds us once per hour on the local Christmas radio station: It’s the most wonderful time of the year. I agree — the holiday season is full of warmth and tradition, with a dash of mirth for good measure. I can’t wait to see my kids’ faces light up as they...

Balancing dreams, realities

The allure of retirement paints a seductive image: golden sands beneath one’s feet, the luxury of time to rediscover long-lost hobbies, and an escape from the unrelenting pace of working life. It’s a time many look forward to, often spending years meticulously planning and daydreaming about.

However, as with many things in life, there’s a chasm between dream and reality. Many retirees find themselves precariously balancing on a tightrope, with grand aspirations on one side and the stark realities of life on the other.

In the world of baseball card collecting, where the pursuit of the perfect mint-condition specimen can consume hours, days or even years, there's one grammatical conundrum that can leave even the most seasoned collector scratching their heads: the proper usage of "lay" and "lie."

I know you were wondering how I’d tie baseball card collecting to grammar...

Making the ‘moist’ of 2023

E-mail Print PDF
I don’t often watch TikTok videos, but, when I do, they involve giant jars of mayonnaise. In a bold bid to crown "moist" the 2023 Merriam-Webster Word of the Year, the Kraft company made a grand gesture by delivering an 8-foot-tall jar of mayonnaise to the eponymous dictionary’s headquarters. While “moist” is often considered an unpleasant word, it is actually the perfect word to capture the year 2023.

The reason? Moist is actually a very timely word.

The year 2023 has been a year of extremes. We have experienced both record heat and record rainfall. We have seen both political turmoil and social unrest. In a world so often divided, moist is a word that can bring us together...
