Nothing new in the diet universe

I arrived at my favorite eatery for seasonal cinnamon pancakes with cream cheese frosting. Yum. As I started to enjoy the tantalizing taste on my tongue, a middle-aged couple seated at the next table blabbed on and on about weight loss and dieting. Blah. Blah. Blah. “Stop already!” I wanted to shout.

Journalist Gina Kolata penned a 2018 article for the New York Times where she surmised, “You’d think that scientists at an international conference on obesity would know by now which diet is best, and why. As it turns out, even the experts still have widely divergent opinions.”

One of the best things about living in New Mexico is the abundance of great natural beauty and opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.

Whether it’s the view from just about any rural highway or one of the many state and national parks and forests, New Mexico boasts some of the most beautiful land in the nation. It is a heritage that all proud New Mexicans want to protect for future generations, a pride woven into our culture.

The preservation of our public lands is a sacred trust, but it’s being made more difficult by the inaction of Congress.

Much of New Mexico’s beautiful landscape has been protected and enhanced...

Santa is big business — too big

Before the 1840s, Christmas was about the birth of Jesus, get-togethers with family and friends, and celebrating the holiday with favorite foods.

According to the Pew Research Center, 33 percent of those who were surveyed dread the commercialism/materialism of the holiday and 73 percent of people agree that the true meaning of Christmas is being phased out in favor of new gadgets, new clothes, and new stuff. www.pewforum.org.

What happened? Do we blame commercialized Christmas on the “Coca-Cola” Santa Claus that styled and profiled in the Saturday Evening Post in 1920?

Dangling the carrot of instant gratification on television commercials, our children beg and plead for the...
