Report: Dead man choked to death

By Bernie Dotson

A dead body discovered off Second Street and not far from Sundance Dental isn’t the result of a homicide, but is something that is related to choking and drinking, according to a police report.

On July 7 at 3:15 pm, Officer Dwayne Holder of the Gallup Police Department responded to a report about someone laying on the ground and not breathing. Personnel from the city fire department checked the subject, but found no pulse.

“…informing me that the male subject was deceased and there was the onset of rigor mortis,” Holder wrote in the report as to what medics said.

After scouring the scene for potential weaponry, Holder spoke to a male individual who provided information on how the deceased got to the point of needing assistance. The person told Holder that a group of random males had been drinking “up on a hill,” when he told the other males to watch the deceased because he looked as though he was choking. The man attempted to cross yellow crime tape at the scene, the police report states.

The man also told police that another male who had been drinking was “passed out” among some trees. Holder made attempts to talk to the other males in the drinking, but came away with nothing, as each was inebriated, the report reads.

The body was transported to the state medical examiner’s office, Holder concluded.
