If you’ve never taken the time to attempt to see the good – and the good people – in Gallup, then maybe you deserve to be depressed. The good is out there if you will only open your eyes!

Maybe I have an unfair advantage as sports writer, but I do see young boys and girls working hard every day to make a better life for themselves. They are not all athletes; some use their natural intelligence, which will in the long run provide them with a longer span to show their abilities.

Starting with this issue, The Gallup Sun will be providing profiles on as many of these high school students as possible, at least one every week. The stories will be uplifting and will also demonstrate how our kids manage to get along in this dysfunctional world some adults have impressed on them.

Help me out if you can by texting my cell with contact information about these students. I prefer them to be at least juniors in high school to be eligible for an interview. If their talents are above my pay grade, I am willing to learn. Failing in that, I can always pass it along to someone who will understand.

Hope to see you in the bleachers as district play starts up this coming week!
