State Police warns of phone scams in Grants area

Grants, N.M. - The New Mexico State Police has become aware of recent reports of a phone scam in the Grants, N.M. area in which a victim is contacted by phone and told they have warrant for their arrest. When the victim answers they are asked to provide their bank information and make a payment over the phone to cancel the warrant.

Scammers are also instructing the victims that they are an officer with the New Mexico State Police and the phone number they are using comes up on victim’s phone as the New Mexico State Police Grants Sub-District phone number (505) 287-4377. The phone number provided by the scammers is the actual phone number to the State Police Office in Grants, N.M. When victims call back the phone number provided by scammers, it connects directly to the New Mexico State Police Office in Grants.

If you receive a phone call or a text requesting your personal information or bank information, do not disclose any bank information, one’s name or provide any personal identifying information. Immediately hang up the phone and contact the New Mexico State Police or call 911.

The New Mexico State Police will never call you and ask for your bank information, a payment over the phone or request your personal information to verify that you have a warrant for your arrest.
