Late Summer Film Festival September 14 through 16

Building on the success of the last three years the Gallup Film Festival is set for its annual event this September.

There is a near 13 percent growth from last year with nearly 60 entries this year.

Categories for this year will be narrative short, documentary short, student film, short comedy, documentary feature, animation, narrative feature, and music video. New categories for this year are SciFi fantasy and web series-new media. A category will be held for filmmakers of New Mexico.

Most submissions this year are from the U.S. from 12 states.

The Gallup Film Festival has received films from Israel, Spain, Korea, Switzerland, Denmark, China, Brazil, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Mexico.

Last year there were 668 attendees in the three-day festival, according to an ordered study turned over to the Gallup city government.

There are 19 award categories that are judged by seven panelists.  The audience participates by voting among 12 categories.

Two others include best New Mexico film, and best language preservation film.

“We are pleased by the success of each year’s growth,” says founder and director Knifewing Segura.

Beginning on Thursday, September 14 this years three days will go into Saturday.

Actors who have participated in previous years include Daryl Tonemah, Gary Farmer, Ernie Tsosie, Roger Willie, and Martin Sensmeier.  Writer for the acclaimed Te’ Ata, a 2016 release, Jeannie Barbour attended last year’s festival.

“It’s joyful to see so many people enjoying the festival,” Segura said.  “It’s a way for new and up and coming talent to get noticed.”

Some film winners from last year are Taraz, Te’ Ata, and Scatter Their Own.  Two local winners include Honor Riders, Monster Slayer, and The Rebound all winning multiple categories.

City Counselor Allan Landavazo says of the festival, “It’s a positive event for the city of Gallup, and continues to grow every year.”

Tickets will go on sale in August.  They can be purchased on the Gallup Film Festival website or at the Gallup Downtown Conference Center at 204 West Coal Avenue.
